The Dallas Cowboys have made significant defensive upgrades this offseason, including a trade for linebacker Dee Winters during last weekend’s NFL Draft. A native of Texas who played college football at TCU, Winters shared his reaction to the trade with reporters on Thursday.

Winters revealed that he was in the process of moving into his new home in Arlington when he received the call about the trade. His surprise was evident in his remarks.

"Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it at all. Everything happens for a reason. I'm excited to be back home, and I get to play for the Dallas Cowboys."

The current expectation is that Winters will serve as the Cowboys’ middle linebacker, though he admitted uncertainty about his exact role. He expressed enthusiasm for the team’s defensive scheme, which emphasizes movement in open space.

"I like that the scheme will have me move in open space," Winters said. "It’s a perfect fit."

One aspect of the role that will be new to Winters is serving as the "green dot" linebacker, which involves receiving defensive calls directly in his helmet from the coordinator. He acknowledged the challenge but expressed willingness to adapt.

"I’ve only done a few practices with the green dot. That’ll be new, but there’s a first time for everything. I’m willing to do whatever it takes."

Winters is entering the final year of his rookie contract, making his 2026 performance critical for his career and financial future.

"This is where you help your family and your football career. I think this is a huge year for me. I’m excited to work in this scheme, be in space and make plays. That’s the biggest thing."

Last season, Winters started all 17 games for the San Francisco 49ers, accumulating 101 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, five passes defensed, and one interception.
