The Miami Dolphins made two calculated moves during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday night. First, they traded down from the No. 30 spot to No. 27 with the San Francisco 49ers. Then, they used that selection to take cornerback Chris Johnson.
In exchange for dropping three spots in the first round, the 49ers received the Dolphins’ No. 90 overall pick. Miami also sent the 138th overall selection to San Francisco as part of the deal.
Earlier in the draft, the Dolphins selected offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor with the 12th overall pick. With these moves, Miami now holds 11 additional picks remaining over the final two days of the draft.
Johnson, who played his college football at San Diego State, was named co-defensive player of the year in the Mountain West Conference. In his final season with the Aztecs, he recorded four interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns. His playmaking ability and experience should allow him to compete for immediate playing time in head coach Jeff Hafley’s defense.
The Dolphins bolstered their secondary during free agency by signing three cornerbacks. Johnson’s addition further strengthens Miami’s depth at the position.
