The Houston Texans are no strangers to trading up in the first round of the NFL Draft. The franchise employed this strategy in 2021 to acquire defensive end Will Anderson Jr. Now, in 2024, the Texans have executed another trade to bolster their offensive line.
In a deal with the Buffalo Bills, Houston moved up from the 28th overall pick to the 26th overall pick. With that selection, the Texans chose Georgia Tech guard Keylan Rutledge, a player expected to address the team’s longstanding offensive line challenges.
The Texans sent three picks to Buffalo to finalize the trade: the 28th overall pick, the 69th overall pick, and the 167th overall pick. The move reflects Houston’s commitment to improving the protection for quarterback C.J. Stroud, whose performance could benefit significantly from a stronger offensive line.
Rutledge, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound guard, brings size and experience to the Texans’ offensive line. He started all 12 games for Georgia Tech in 2023 and was named to the All-ACC Second Team. His selection at No. 26 underscores the Texans’ focus on building a more competitive roster around their franchise quarterback.
