The Chicago Bears entered the 2024 NFL Draft with a glaring defensive deficiency, ranking 29th in total defense during the 2023 season. The franchise had not selected a defensive player in the first round since Roquan Smith in 2018, a decision that contributed to long-term defensive struggles.
With the 25th overall pick, the Bears addressed their need for a starting safety by selecting Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman. The move comes after the departures of veterans Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker this offseason, leaving a void in the secondary.
Thieneman, who played his final college season at Oregon after transferring from Purdue, brings a strong defensive resume. In 2023, he recorded 96 tackles, seven passes defensed, and two interceptions. His collegiate production underscores his readiness to contribute immediately in the NFL.
The Bears’ defensive overhaul does not end with Thieneman. The franchise remains in pursuit of an edge rusher, as Chicago ranked 31st in pass-rush win rate last season. Additional defensive reinforcements are expected in subsequent rounds to bolster a unit that struggled mightily in 2023.
