Two years ago, I attended an outdoor wedding in August where sweltering heat and humidity forced guests to retreat to their cars for air conditioning. A handheld fan like Dyson’s new $99.99 HushJet Mini Cool would have been a game-changer—if only it were quieter.

The HushJet Mini Cool is as slim and sleek as Dyson’s recent thin vacuum and hair dryer, but its name is misleading. Despite the “Hush” in its title, the fan is not quiet enough for discreet use during a ceremony or reception. However, it remains a well-designed product that outperforms many competitors in both aesthetics and functionality.

Design and Build: Compact, Portable, and Pocket-Friendly

All of the HushJet Mini Cool’s components—including the motor, 5,000mAh rechargeable battery, and spinning blades—are safely enclosed within a cylindrical body just 38mm in diameter. This compact design makes it easy to slip into a pocket, unlike many handheld fans that use exposed or bulky blades, which can be unsafe for children or inconvenient to carry.

Weighing 208 grams—about the same as an iPhone 17 Pro—the HushJet Mini Cool is lightweight enough to carry comfortably in hot weather. Its portability is further enhanced by a toggle switch for power and a rocker button to cycle through five fan speeds, indicated by a strip of small white LEDs. A Boost Mode, activated by holding the “plus” side of the rocker button, delivers even stronger airflow.

The only minor gripe is the need to grip the fan above the vent at its base to avoid blocking airflow. Adding textured grip zones could help users naturally position their hands correctly.

Battery Life: Impressive but Inconsistent

Dyson claims the HushJet Mini Cool can run for up to six hours on its lowest setting. However, at its highest speed (excluding Boost Mode), the battery lasted just 62 minutes. While this was better than expected, it highlights a trade-off between power and endurance.

The fan displays remaining battery life via its five white LEDs, but only when turned off. A real-time battery indicator while the fan is running would help users better estimate cooling time.

Standing and Power Options: Convenient but Limited

The HushJet Mini Cool is bottom-heavy and can stand on its own. Dyson includes a base-widening accessory to improve stability, though it’s small and easy to misplace. For continuous use, the fan can be powered via USB-C, but it’s restricted to the lowest speed setting when plugged in. At this speed, you’ll need to stay within 5 feet of the fan to feel any airflow.

Where to Buy the Dyson HushJet Mini Cool

Dyson’s marketing for the HushJet Mini Cool emphasizes its sleek design and powerful performance, but the fan’s noise levels and battery limitations may give some users pause. Still, for those seeking a portable, high-performance cooling solution, it’s a compelling option—just don’t expect it to be silent.
