Rumors ahead of Coachella 2024 suggested Sabrina Carpenter might bring Madonna on stage for a tribute. After all, Carpenter’s pop style—blending sexuality and self-awareness—owes much to Madonna’s iconic 1980s career. A surprise performance of "Vogue" and an astrology lesson (with a new moon in Taurus) further fueled the moment. Madonna also announced her new album, Confessions II, adding to the spectacle.

Yet Carpenter’s set also featured an unexpected twist: an inadvertent A League Of Their Own reunion. Her "movies" theme included bringing Susan Sarandon on stage last weekend to deliver a monologue as an older version of Carpenter, reflecting on her career. This weekend, Carpenter repeated the act with Geena Davis, framing the performance as a Thelma And Louise homage—though the timing made it feel more like Thelma or Louise.

With two of the film’s top-billed stars already on stage, the opportunity for a full cast reunion was glaringly missed. Lori Petty, Tom Hanks, and others could have elevated the set into Coachella’s defining A League Of Their Own-themed performance. Instead, Carpenter played her biggest hits to a screaming crowd while paying tribute to Madonna.

What could have been a legendary moment became just another headline set.
