Dyson, a brand synonymous with high-speed motor engineering, has revealed that its newest robot vacuum, the Spot Scrub Ai, does not use a Dyson-built motor. The confirmation comes from Nathan Lawson McLean, senior design manager at Dyson, who spoke to The Verge about the device’s development.
The Spot Scrub Ai, which adds mopping functionality to Dyson’s robot vacuum lineup, was co-engineered with external partners. According to Lawson McLean, the robot vacuum integrates “new and already existing Dyson technologies with other platforms.” This includes both its lidar-based navigation system and the vacuum motor, which were developed by a third party.
“It’s not one of our V10 motors; it’s one of our partner technologies,” Lawson McLean stated. The shift marks a departure from Dyson’s traditional in-house motor design, a core pillar of the company’s engineering identity.
The Spot Scrub Ai is the latest addition to Dyson’s robot vacuum and mop lineup, expanding its capabilities beyond vacuuming to include wet mopping. The device leverages advanced navigation technology to enhance cleaning efficiency and precision.
