Emma Stone and Chris Pine are set to headline the original romantic comedy ‘The Catch’, with Universal Pictures targeting a May 21, 2027 theatrical release.
Plot details for the film are being kept confidential. Dave McCary, Stone’s husband and a former Saturday Night Live segment director, will direct from a script by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin.
The production team includes Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting, who will produce through Fruit Tree under a first-look deal with Universal. Additional producers are Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Michael H. Weber via 21 Laps. Universal’s Senior EVP of Production Development Erik Baiers and Creative Executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project.
Upcoming Summer 2027 Releases
‘The Catch’ joins a crowded pre-Memorial Day weekend slate, including Paramount and Blumhouse’s ‘Paranormal Activity’ revival and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s ‘Bad Fairies’, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ncuti Gatwa.
Emma Stone’s Recent Achievements
Stone recently earned her fourth Oscar nomination for her lead performance in ‘Bugonia’. She also received a Best Picture nomination as a producer, making her the first woman to secure Oscar nominations as both an actress and producer on two different films simultaneously—a feat she first achieved in 2024 with ‘Poor Things’.
Dave McCary’s Directorial Background
McCary began his career directing the YouTube series ‘Epic Rap Battles of History’ and segments for Saturday Night Live. His feature debut came in 2017 with the dramedy ‘Brigsby Bear’, starring Kyle Mooney.
