The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has relaxed its restrictive router regulations, allowing foreign-made routers to receive software and firmware updates until at least January 1, 2029.
The agency also broadened the waiver to include additional types of software updates. Previously, the FCC permitted only security patches and other updates for routers already on the market or sold to consumers until March 1, 2027.
On Friday, the FCC announced an extension of the waiver, pushing the update deadline to January 1, 2029. The agency indicated that this waiver may eventually become a permanent policy.
The software-update cutoff date is part of a broader set of rules the FCC introduced in March. Citing national security concerns, the FCC imposed a ban on new foreign-made hardware and imposed limits on software updates for routers authorized for sale before the ban took effect.
