During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida provided key updates on the game’s future, including the upcoming Switch 2 version and continued support for the PS4.
PS4 Support to Continue Through Patch 8.3
Yoshida confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will remain playable on PS4 through patch 8.3, which is expected to arrive in 2028. However, he noted that the team is approaching the console’s data storage limits. Square Enix has collaborated with Sony engineers to optimize the game for PS4 up to this point, but the data requirements will soon exceed the console’s capacity.
Yoshida humorously remarked that players have “two years” to upgrade to a PS5 before PS4 support ends.
Switch 2 Version Announced for August 2026
Square Enix also revealed that Final Fantasy XIV will launch on the Switch 2 in August 2026. The release will include a one-month free early access period before official service begins. Unlike other platforms, the Switch 2 version will require a separate monthly subscription fee, distinct from the standard subscription for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC.
Notably, players already subscribed on another platform will receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription fee. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to play.
