What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)?
In 2011, Palantir combined the roles of solutions engineers and integration engineers into a single position, dubbing it the Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE. The company introduced this title to reflect the evolving capabilities and strategic importance of the role.
FDEs are uniquely positioned to sell AI products to businesses while simultaneously training AI models to meet those businesses' needs. This dual responsibility bridges the gap between technical development and practical application.
Why Tech CEOs Are Calling FDEs the Next Big Thing
More than a decade after Palantir popularized the FDE role, industry leaders now recognize it as a critical function for AI deployment. Box CEO Aaron Levie emphasized this in an X post, stating:
"Forward deployed engineers, or equivalent, are about to become one of the most in-demand jobs in tech. And one of the most important functions for AI rollouts."
Levie added that FDEs represent "a massive role in tech now" and "another example of the kind of highly technical work that AI is creating."
Google Cloud and OpenAI Expand FDE Teams
On Tuesday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced the company’s plans to hire hundreds of FDEs to support customer adoption of its AI products. According to The Information, Google is scaling its FDE workforce to meet growing demand for enterprise AI solutions.
"As part of this expansion, we are investing in hiring additional Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) to help us scale customer AI transformation," Kurian said in a LinkedIn post. "While having FDEs is not new for Google Cloud, the demand from customers and partners for Google enterprise AI products and Google engineers to help them embrace agent development is growing very rapidly."
OpenAI has also prioritized FDEs in its latest initiative. The company launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, a partnership with consulting and investment firms to embed engineers specializing in frontier AI deployment into businesses.
"The OpenAI Deployment Company will extend OpenAI’s ability to embed engineers specialized in frontier AI deployment, known as Forward Deployed Engineers, or FDEs, into organizations working on complex problems in demanding environments," OpenAI stated. "These FDEs will work closely with business leaders, operators, and frontline teams to identify where AI can make the biggest impact, redesign organizational infrastructure and critical workflows around it, and turn those gains into durable systems."
Anthropic and the Growing Demand for FDEs
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic finalized a joint venture with private equity firms Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and Hellman Friedman to distribute its Claude AI models to their customers. This move underscores the rising importance of FDEs in scaling AI adoption.
Data from LinkedIn reveals a dramatic surge in FDE roles:
- 8,500 FDE positions were created in the U.S. between 2023 and 2025.
- Job postings for FDEs increased by 800% between January and September 2025.
These roles are designed to help enterprises transition from AI experimentation to full-scale deployment, ensuring businesses can effectively utilize AI tools developed by labs.
Compensation and Qualifications for FDE Roles
A current job listing for an FDE at Anthropic offers an annual salary ranging from $200,000 to $300,000. The role requires several years of consulting experience or a background in technical, customer-facing positions.
