FX has dropped a surprise prequel episode of the critically acclaimed series The Bear ahead of its fifth and final season. Titled Gary, the hourlong installment is now available to stream on Hulu.
The episode centers on Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal), characters from the original series. Both Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal co-wrote the episode, while series creator Christopher Storer directed it. Set a few years before the events of The Bear, the episode follows Richie and Mikey on a work trip.
"Making this was a dream come true. Thanks to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois."
Production on The Bear Season 5 began in January. In February, recurring cast member Jamie Lee Curtis shared a behind-the-scenes post confirming the series' conclusion.
"FINISHED STRONG! Surrounded by an extraordinary crew and group of writers and producers and scene partners on the show that Chris Storer created, completing the story of this extraordinary family that we have all fallen in love with. Got to finish it out with my baby Berzatto bear."
The Bear premiered in 2022 and quickly became a critical and awards sensation. Over four seasons, the series has earned 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and five Golden Globe Awards, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
The ensemble cast includes Jeremy Allen White as Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richard "Richie" Jerimovich, Ayo Edebiri as Sydney "Syd" Adamu, Lionel Boyce as Marcus Brooks, Liza Colón-Zayas as Tina Marrero, Matty Matheson as Neil Fak, and Edwin Lee Gibson as Ebraheim.
