The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) descended into chaos last night after a man armed with a shotgun and additional weapons breached a security checkpoint.

Following the discharge of gunfire, the suspect was disarmed and taken into custody. Authorities now report that the shooter specifically targeted "Trump administration officials", according to two sources cited by CBS News.

The suspect in the shooting outside the WHCD told law enforcement following his arrest that he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials, two sources told CBS News. The suspect didn't specifically say he was targeting President Trump, just "administration officials."

President Donald Trump, who was present on stage, was swiftly evacuated from the venue.

Suspect Identified as Cole Tomas Allen

D.C. police have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Authorities believe Allen was a registered guest at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was held. He held a degree in engineering from CalTech and had been working part-time as a teacher.

The White House released security footage of the incident and shared an image of the suspect on social media.

Security Concerns and Historical Context

The White House Correspondents' Dinner is an annual event uniting Washington’s media and political elite. This year’s theme was centered on the First Amendment. Reports indicate that security measures at the event were unusually relaxed.

This incident follows intense scrutiny of the Secret Service after a 2024 campaign stop shooting in which a shooter injured Trump and killed another individual.

Witness Accounts Describe Lockdown Near White House

Journalists Robby Soave of Reason and another attendee were at a nearby Substack-hosted party at the Renwick Gallery when the shooting occurred. They described being held inside the venue as the area was locked down.

"We were held inside the party; no one was able to enter or exit. Shortly after 10 p.m., we were allowed to exit," they reported. The surrounding area was cordoned off by Secret Service and local police, with vehicles barred and pedestrians directed away from the White House.

This remains a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
