The MV Hondius cruise ship, affected by an unprecedented Andes hantavirus outbreak, arrived in the Canary Islands off the coast of Tenerife Island over the weekend and is currently undergoing evacuation. At least one new case of hantavirus has been identified during the disembarkation process.
As of Monday morning, officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the last of the passengers aboard the MV Hondius are expected to be evacuated by the end of the day. A total of 30 crew members will remain on board to navigate the ship back to Rotterdam, Netherlands. Prior to the evacuation, the vessel carried 147 people in total.
All evacuated passengers are being transported off the island via specially arranged repatriation flights, not commercial airlines. The evacuation process and flight arrangements are being coordinated by Spanish authorities, the WHO, and other national health officials.
