He Bled Neon blends two of cinema’s most beloved concepts: the high-stakes tension of a revenge thriller and the dazzling neon glow of Las Vegas. The film follows Ethan (Joe Cole), a young man who returns to his hometown for his brother’s funeral, only to learn that his sibling’s death may have been orchestrated by figures lurking in the city’s criminal underworld.
Determined to uncover the truth, Ethan reunites with his childhood friends—played by Marshawn Lynch, Rita Ora, and Ismael Cruz Córdova—to investigate the murder and reconnect with the harsh realities of his upbringing. The result is a story that feels ripped from the silver screen… or at least inspired by real life.
Producer and co-writer Nate Bolotin shared with Den of Geek how his own experiences shaped the film’s narrative:
"Twenty years ago, my stepbrother and best friend passed away. I got a text message from a mutual friend like how it happens in the movie. I had to go back, bury him, reconnect with people that I had lost touch with. Someone came up to me at the funeral and said, ‘Hey, you know, I think there’s some foul play here.’ We never went too deep. Then 15 years later it just clicked, and I’m like, ‘We haven’t seen a Vegas noir thriller set outside the Strip, away from the classic lights you’re familiar with.’"
Marshawn Lynch, known for his NFL career and later roles in films like Bottoms and Murderville, added a playful twist to Bolotin’s story:
"I’m calling bullshit. I remember you telling me that story. I think you left out the part where you went on a killing spree and started knocking shit down. Oh shit! Allegedly. Allegedly."
While Bolotin’s life story isn’t an exact match for Ethan’s journey in He Bled Neon, it’s clear the film draws heavily from his experiences. The movie’s commitment to authenticity is further bolstered by its cast, particularly Lynch, who brings a raw, action-hero energy to the role.
Ismael Cruz Córdova, who plays Arondir in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, praised Lynch’s influence on the set:
"Marshawn being authentic and himself really helped all of our performances. He instilled in us a gravitas and a realness that we can all embody. It was a real asset to have somebody rooted in the culture who can speak on it. It allowed us to feel authentic."
The film also features Rita Ora, the British singer, songwriter, and actress known for her global stardom. Born in Kosovo and raised in the UK, Ora brings a distinct perspective to her role, despite her limited familiarity with the American Southwest. Her commitment to capturing the film’s authentic tone underscores the project’s dedication to realism.
