Unlocking Base Building in Subnautica 2: A Step-by-Step Guide

Subnautica 2 caters to two types of survival game players: those who thrive in harsh environments and engage in combat, and those who prefer relaxing by constructing expansive bases. The game’s base-building mechanics have evolved significantly from the first title, offering new tools and features to enhance the experience.

To begin building your underwater sanctuary, you must first unlock and craft the Habitat Builder tool. This tool grants access to a build menu featuring corridors, doors, production machines like the Fabricator, and various decorative items. Subnautica 2 also includes a small tutorial via a NOA (Non-Player Character) entry within a nearby structure.

How to Build Your First Base in Subnautica 2

Before constructing your base, follow these steps to unlock the Habitat Builder:

  • Travel 80 meters southeast of your Lifepod to locate a Welcome Center building that has run out of power.
  • Insert a Basic Battery into the Welcome Center’s wall panel to restore power to its Bio Lab and activate the NOA.
  • The NOA will provide a brief tutorial on how base building works in Subnautica 2.

How to Unlock the Habitat Builder Tool

Crafting the Habitat Builder requires a Survival Multitool and a Scanner. Here’s how to obtain them:

Crafting the Survival Multitool

Use the following resources to craft the multitool:

  • Titanium (3)

Crafting the Scanner

Gather these materials to craft the scanner:

  • Titanium (2)
  • Quartz (2)
  • Basic Battery (1)

Titanium is the most accessible resource, found abundantly around your Lifepod. Quartz is also easy to acquire early in the game. Basic Batteries require copper, which you can collect from nearby caves. To obtain copper wires, you’ll need to:

  • Mine copper from caves.
  • Use your Multitool to break open Acid Raion and collect their pouches for additional resources.

Locating Habitat Builder Blueprints

After crafting the multitool and scanner, search for two old Habitat Builder tools to scan:

  • First Location: Return to the Welcome Center. Outside the entrance, next to the "Welcome Center" sign, is a metal box containing one Habitat Builder tool.
  • Second Location: Enter the Welcome Center and dive into the hole in the center of the floor. Inside a metal storage container next to the Oxygen Tunic, you’ll find the second Habitat Builder tool.

Once both blueprint components are scanned, the Habitat Builder tool will be available in your Fabricator. Craft it using:

  • Titanium (2)
  • Glass (1)
  • Basic Battery (1)
  • Copper Wire (1)

Accessing Base-Building Blueprints in Subnautica 2

With the Habitat Builder in your hotbar, hold the tool and press the Open Menu key (right-click on PC) to access the build menu. As you progress, collect additional resources and scan furniture to unlock more blueprints for your base.

"Subnautica 2’s base-building mechanics offer a fresh take on survival and construction, allowing players to create personalized underwater habitats."
