IKEA has shared a sneak preview of three experimental pieces from its upcoming PS 2026 collection, including an inflatable chair that challenges the bulky, cheap designs of the 1990s.
The centerpiece, the PS 2026 easy chair, is constructed from two fabric-wrapped air chambers supported by a steel frame. Unlike conventional inflatable furniture, this design prioritizes aesthetics and structural integrity.
This isn’t IKEA’s first foray into inflatable furniture. The IKEA Museum documents an earlier attempt in 2000 with the Rolig easy chair and Innerlig sofa. However, those products faced criticism for high costs and leaky valves, leading to gradual deflation over time.
The PS 2026 collection will be fully unveiled at IKEA’s annual event on May 13.
