Recent Catholic convert JD Vance has drawn criticism from lifelong Catholics after publicly questioning remarks made by Pope Leo XIV regarding the war in Iran.

During a Turning Point USA event earlier this week, Vance stated,

“I think it’s very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology.”

His comments followed a series of provocative actions by President Donald Trump, Vance’s employer, including the posting of an AI-generated image depicting Trump as Jesus and labeling Pope Leo XIV as weak on crime.

The pope has been outspoken in his opposition to Trump’s approach to the Iran conflict. After Trump suggested on social media that Iran could face the loss of its entire civilization unless it complied with his demands, Pope Leo XIV told reporters,

“Today, as we all know, there was this threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is truly unacceptable.”

The escalating feud between the pope and the president has reportedly prompted admonishments from nearly every bishop in the Catholic Church, according to National Catholic Reporter columnist Michael Sean Winters.

Winters, while supportive of converts, cautioned against their overconfidence in expressing theological opinions prematurely.

“I love converts, but you move into somebody’s house, you don’t start rearranging the furniture.”
