Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun has announced a $20 million liquidity injection for Aave, the top decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol, and called on the platform to expand to Tron, the blockchain he founded in 2017.

Tron holds $5.3 billion in deposits, making it the fifth-largest blockchain for decentralized finance. The platform boasts a dedicated following, particularly in Asia and developing countries, driven in part by Sun’s influence as its billionaire founder. Despite its scale, Aave has not yet deployed on Tron.

Sun emphasized his commitment in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday:

“TRON and HTX stand together with AAVE jointly supplying $20M USDT to AAVE Core V3 Market in a show of support to bring AAVE to TRON. DeFi United!”

HTX, a Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange also owned by Sun, will participate in the liquidity provision.

Aave’s Recent Challenges and Sun’s Role

Sun’s announcement follows a major security breach at KelpDAO, an Ethereum-based DeFi protocol, where North Korean hackers stole approximately $293 million on April 18. The attackers deposited $200 million of the stolen assets as collateral on Aave and borrowed large amounts of Ether, leaving Aave with at least $177 million in unrecoverable bad debt.

In response, a coordinated effort among major DeFi participants, along with partial recoveries of the stolen funds, has helped Aave cover the shortfall. To date, the protocol has secured $160 million—about 80%—of the required coverage. Sun had previously urged the KelpDAO hackers to return the stolen assets.

History of Aave on Tron

The question of whether Aave should deploy on Tron is not new. In April 2023, the Aave-Chan Initiative, a service provider for the Aave DAO, conducted a vote to gauge interest in a potential Tron deployment. The vote passed, and a formal request for comment was published between April 30 and August 22, 2023. Several Aave DAO service providers, including Chaos Labs and LlamaRisk, contributed feedback and risk assessments.

However, progress stalled after the initial discussions. Sun’s latest move—combined with his $20 million commitment—could reignite the debate and potentially lead to a binding on-chain vote on Aave’s expansion to Tron.
