The District Court of Johnson County, Kansas, has dismissed the misdemeanor domestic battery case against Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.

Merritt’s attorney, Ryan Ginie, confirmed the dismissal in a statement to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media:

"The DA’s office looked at it a little more thoroughly and reviewed some additional information," Merritt’s attorney said, "and agreed it was a matter that should be dismissed."

Merritt was arrested and charged on April 22, 2023, accused of causing bodily harm to a daughter. The charges stemmed from an alleged incident involving a family member.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation publicly last weekend, stating the team was awaiting the case’s conclusion. Reid emphasized Merritt’s transparency throughout the process:

"Dave’s been very up front with everything," Reid told Ron Kopp of arrowheadpride.com. "We’re still going through that whole procedure. In this case, you always let the law enforcement part take care of itself and work its way out. And so that’s where we’re at right now, but we’re aware, and we’ve had communication with both sides there, with the law enforcement side and Dave."

Merritt, who is 54 years old, has served as the Chiefs’ defensive backs coach since 2019. Prior to joining Kansas City, he held NFL coaching positions with the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Jets.
