The Detroit Lions have made a decisive move regarding two of their young stars, exercising the fifth-year option on running back Jahmyr Gibbs while declining the same for linebacker Jack Campbell, according to Dan Miller of Fox2 Sports.
This decision fully guarantees Gibbs a salary of $14.293 million for the 2027 season. Meanwhile, the Lions chose not to pick up Campbell’s fifth-year option, which would have secured him $21.925 million in 2027.
The team has expressed interest in signing both players to long-term contract extensions in the future, with Campbell viewed as a cornerstone of Detroit’s defensive plans.
Jack Campbell’s Breakout 2025 Season
Campbell’s performance in 2025 solidified his status as a Pro Bowl-caliber player. He earned first-team All-Pro honors and was selected to the Pro Bowl after an elite season that included:
- 176 total tackles
- 9 tackles for loss
- 5 sacks
- 4 passes defensed
- 3 forced fumbles
Jahmyr Gibbs’ Dominant 2025 Campaign
Gibbs stepped into a full-time starting role in 2025, following the Lions’ offseason trade of David Montgomery. His production was a major factor in Detroit’s offensive success:
- 243 rushing attempts for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns
- 77 receptions for 616 yards and 5 touchdowns
His versatility was on full display in 2024 when he led the NFL with 20 total touchdowns (12 rushing, 8 receiving).
With Gibbs locked in through 2027 and Campbell remaining a priority for a long-term deal, the Lions are positioning both players as central figures in their championship aspirations.
