Marvel’s 'Wonder Man' Gets a Second Season on Disney+
Marvel Studios has confirmed that Wonder Man, one of its most unconventional series, will return for a second season on Disney+. The announcement follows the show’s strong performance on the Nielsen Streaming Originals chart, a milestone not achieved by Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again in its weekly release seasons.
Marvel rarely renews its live-action Disney+ shows, with only Loki and Born Again securing renewals before Wonder Man debuted. Yet the series quickly gained a dedicated audience, thanks to its offbeat premise: a struggling actor named Simon Williams hides his superpowers to pursue Hollywood roles in a risk-averse industry.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Decision to Join the MCU
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, star of Aquaman, revealed that he was initially hesitant to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for Wonder Man. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), he explained that he needed reassurance from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige before committing.
“I asked [Feige], ‘I only get one Marvel buck to spend. Is this worth my dollar, because I can wait.’ And he said, ‘No, trust me, it will be worth it.’ And I’m so glad this is the role I got to spend my dollar on because I’m getting all of the super stuff and I’m getting all of the human stuff at the same time.”
Abdul-Mateen II portrays Simon Williams as a hero more focused on breaking into Hollywood than on his powers. The first season also introduced Trevor Slattery (played by Sir Ben Kingsley), a washed-up actor who forms a heartfelt friendship with Williams. The show deliberately avoids typical Marvel superhero spectacle, a decision that has resonated with audiences.
Season 2 to Maintain the Same Tone
Andrew Guest, the showrunner for Wonder Man, has confirmed that season 2 will retain the series’ unique tone. In an interview, he emphasized that the show’s distinct identity will remain intact.
“The people who like this show and like it because it feels different are going to be rewarded. And the people who think that this show is going to suddenly turn into something else, I’m sorry to say, it’s not. Simon still has superpowers. It is still about this relationship, about two artists, and our industry. That is essentially what we want to maintain.”
Guest also shared a heartwarming anecdote about the show’s unexpected appeal:
“One of the things that has been really rewarding is people who don’t think they like Marvel shows, or who have nothing to do with Marvel, find themselves watching it and binging it. My mother’s therapist, the last person who would watch a Marvel show, texted her, ‘I stayed up all night, I’ve never binged a show, I watched the whole thing.’”
Release Date and Future Updates
As of now, Wonder Man season 2 is still in development, and a release date has not been announced. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
