Metro 2039: A Bleaker Vision of the Post-Apocalyptic World

Ukrainian game developer 4A Games has unveiled Metro 2039, the latest installment in its critically acclaimed Metro series. The game is set to launch this winter, promising an even darker and more intense experience than its predecessors. The announcement comes as 4A Games faces real-world challenges, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine deeply influencing the game’s development.

The cinematic reveal for Metro 2039 offers a glimpse into the ruined, terrifying world of the series. While the trailer provides minimal story details, it immerses players in the post-apocalyptic setting, where survivors live in the wreckage of Moscow’s metro system. The game is set approximately 25 years after a nuclear apocalypse devastated the planet.

A United but Fractured Underground Society

In Metro 2039, the various factions inhabiting the metro have been forcibly united under a new group called “the Novoreich.” This regime is led by a Spartan known as Hunter, who promises “salvation and a new life” to those who remain above ground. However, the reality is far from utopian. The underground society is plagued by propaganda, authoritarian rule, and violence, mirroring the oppressive regimes seen in dystopian fiction.

Collaboration with Exiled Author Dmitry Glukhovsky

The Metro series is based on novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, a Russian author who has been living in exile due to his public opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While Metro 2039 is not a direct adaptation of Glukhovsky’s works, 4A Games collaborated closely with him to craft a story “shaped by shared values of freedom and truth, and informed by the harsh realities of the world today.”

War’s Impact on Development

4A Games has openly acknowledged how the war in Ukraine has shaped the development of Metro 2039. In a statement, the studio described the challenges faced by its team:

“Many developers continue to work from multiple locations, facing daily challenges never anticipated. Through power outages, reliance on generators, and disruptions from missile and drone attacks, development has continued – driven by resilience, shared support, and a commitment to the work.”

The studio added that the war has “directly shaped the development of Metro 2039,” with its story focusing on “choices, actions, consequences, and the cost of securing a future.” While the narrative is distinctly Ukrainian, the game remains an authentic Metro experience.

Meet The Stranger: The First Voiced Protagonist

The reveal trailer introduces The Stranger, the first voiced protagonist in the Metro series. Though his dialogue in the preview is limited to a scream, The Stranger represents a new direction for the franchise. The trailer offers a brief but intense look at the game’s atmosphere, reinforcing the series’ reputation for bleak, survival-focused storytelling.

For fans of the Metro series, Metro 2039 promises to deliver an even more harrowing and immersive experience, shaped by both real-world events and the creative vision of 4A Games.
