Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan and Academy Award nominee Austin Butler have been confirmed to star in ‘Miami Vice ’85’ as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Sonny Crockett, respectively. Universal Pictures announced the casting on Wednesday.

Academy Award nominee Joseph Kosinski, known for directing Best Picture Oscar nominees ‘F1’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, will helm the film. The movie will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami, drawing inspiration from the pilot episode and first season of the original Universal Television series, which shaped fashion and filmmaking.

Release Date and Production Details

‘Miami Vice ’85’ will be filmed for IMAX and is scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on August 6, 2027. Production is set to begin later this year.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions—known for ‘The Batman’ and ‘The Penguin’—and by Kosinski. Dan Gilroy, an Academy Award nominee, is writing the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. An earlier draft of the screenplay was written by Eric Warren Singer.

For the studio, Sara Scott, Executive Vice President of Production Development, and Christina Hoffrogge, Creative Executive of Production Development, will oversee the project.

Jordan and Butler’s Upcoming Projects

Most recently, Jordan won an Academy Award, an Actor Award, and two NAACP Awards for his dual performance in ‘Sinners’, his fifth collaboration with director Ryan Coogler. Released in March 2025, ‘Sinners’ became a critical, cultural, and box office success, marking the biggest debut for an original film since 2019.

Jordan’s next project is a reimagining of ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, which he will direct, star in, and produce for Amazon MGM. The film is set to hit theaters worldwide on March 5, 2027.

Butler will next star in the A24 crime thriller ‘Enemies’ alongside Jeremy Allen White.
