The NFL operates under a principle often summarized as: "It’s better to seek forgiveness than ask for permission." This applies to annual team-by-team schedule-release videos, where the league does not require prior approval.
"Upon request, the league will review club videos," a league spokesperson confirmed via email. "There’s no mandate to submit their videos in advance. The league provides best practices and insights to the clubs during ongoing all-32 club meetings."
This policy has been in place for years. However, exceptions exist. Last year, the Indianapolis Colts posted a schedule-release video featuring a Minecraft-themed presentation. The video was swiftly removed after Microsoft, which owns the Minecraft property, did not grant advance authorization.
With the 2024 schedule release underway, teams—particularly those facing the New England Patriots—may feel compelled to reference the offseason’s most talked-about story. ESPN’s Inside The NBA already did so in a clear and deliberate manner.
Before Inside The NBA broached the topic, it was widely assumed the Los Angeles Chargers—renowned for their creative schedule-release videos and scheduled to play the Patriots this season—would avoid the subject. Given the public response to Inside The NBA’s segment, the Chargers may now reconsider their approach.
