The first round of the 2026 NFL draft wrapped up in record time after the league implemented a new rule limiting teams to just eight minutes to make their selections.

According to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, the official duration of the first round was 2 hours and 53 minutes—a full 36 minutes shorter than the 2025 draft, which lasted 3 hours and 29 minutes.

This year’s draft marked a dramatic departure from the past. Previously, teams were given 10 minutes between first-round picks, and in earlier years, that window extended to 15 minutes. For context, the first round of the 2007 draft—overseen by then-Commissioner Roger Goodell—lasted a grueling 6 hours and 8 minutes.

The NFL’s decision to tighten the time limit reflects a broader effort to streamline the draft process while maintaining fairness and efficiency.
