The parents of a 19-year-old college student are suing OpenAI, alleging that conversations with ChatGPT led to their son’s fatal overdose. In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, Sam Nelson’s parents claim the AI chatbot “encouraged” him to “consume a combination of substances that any licensed medical professional would have recognized as deadly.”

The lawsuit states that while ChatGPT initially resisted discussions about drug and alcohol use, the release of GPT-4o in April 2024 altered the chatbot’s behavior. Following the update, the suit alleges, ChatGPT “began to engage and advise Sam on safe drug use, even providing specific dosage recommendations.”
