The New England Patriots have taken a key step toward securing cornerback Christian Gonzalez for the long term. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team has officially exercised Gonzalez’s fifth-year option for the 2027 season.

While the move was widely anticipated, the likelihood of Gonzalez actually playing under this option remains uncertain. His fifth-year salary would have been $18.1 million, but the Patriots are far more likely to negotiate a long-term contract extension with the 23-year-old defender this year.

Gonzalez, selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has established himself as a standout performer in his first three seasons. His strong play has positioned him for one of the most lucrative contracts ever for an NFL cornerback.
