Pirelli’s latest connected tires, featuring Cyber Tyre technology, will be produced at the company’s plant in Rome, Georgia, following approval from the Italian government. The decision comes amid concerns over Chinese influence in Pirelli, as Sinochem holds a 34.1% stake in the Italian tire manufacturer.
Cyber Tyre technology integrates sensors into the tires, enabling data collection and integration with a vehicle’s on-board systems—such as ABS and stability control—to enhance driving dynamics and safety.
Italy’s Intervention Prevents US Manufacturing Block
For over a year, there were fears that Pirelli might be unable to produce these advanced tires in the US due to US restrictions on Chinese technology. However, Italy stepped in using its ‘golden powers’, a regulatory tool designed to protect companies of national strategic importance.
Last month, Italy imposed restrictions on Sinochem, including:
- Blocking Sinochem-appointed board members from holding top positions such as chairman or CEO;
- Prohibiting Sinochem from exerting influence over Pirelli’s operations;
- Ensuring Pirelli is not required to share sensitive information with the Chinese company.
Georgia Plant to Boost Production Capacity
Pirelli’s Rome, Georgia facility currently produces up to 400,000 tires annually. While the company did not disclose how many Cyber Tyre units will be added to production, the move strengthens Pirelli’s industrial footprint in the US.
“The start of Cyber Tyre production in our Rome, Georgia plant is a significant milestone for Pirelli in this country. It reflects our commitment to bringing advanced technologies like Cyber Tyre closer to the market, further strengthening our industrial footprint and innovation capabilities in the United States.”
