Ploopy has unveiled the Bean, a new open-source mouse alternative that replaces traditional touchpads and trackballs with a red pointing stick reminiscent of IBM’s iconic TrackPoint found on ThinkPad laptops.

The Bean is designed for portability, resembling a small travel mouse, but it operates differently. Instead of moving the device, users interact with the built-in pointing stick surrounded by four buttons.

Unlike most modern mice, the Bean is not wireless. It requires a USB cable for connectivity.

Pricing and Availability

The Canadian company lists the Bean’s price in Canadian dollars only. Preorders are open now via Ploopy’s website for $69.99 CAD, which is approximately $51 USD.

Design and Customization

Beneath its pre-assembled 3D-printed enclosure, the Bean houses a highly sensitive pointing mechanism. The enclosure also allows users to print their own replacement parts, offering a customizable experience.
