Prediction markets like Polymarket operate in a regulatory gray area, and recent incidents underscore the chaos that can ensue. From a hairdryer allegedly tampering with temperature data to a soldier exploiting classified intelligence for massive profits, the platform has become a magnet for both innovation and scandal.

Hairdryer Allegedly Rigged Paris Temperature Bets on Polymarket

French authorities reported suspicious spikes in official temperature readings at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Investigators allege that a hairdryer was used to manipulate the sensors, causing sudden temperature increases. These spikes coincided with gamblers on Polymarket placing bets on temperature fluctuations, resulting in thousands of dollars in winnings for some users.

Polymarket has not mandated the return of winnings, but officials have since relocated the temperature sensor to a new location. Despite the controversy, the platform continues to offer bets on daily temperatures in and around Paris.

U.S. Soldier Arrested for Allegedly Earning $400K Using Classified Intel on Polymarket

A more serious case involves Gannon Ken Van Dyke, a U.S. soldier arrested for allegedly using classified military information to place bets on Polymarket. Van Dyke created an account on December 26, 2025, and placed 13 bets related to the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro between December 27, 2025, and January 2, 2026. His alleged profits exceeded $400,000.

Van Dyke faces one count of wire fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and one count of unlawful monetary transaction, with a maximum sentence of 10 years.
