Ram is recalling 12,736 Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup trucks from the 2023 through 2026 model years due to a software issue that allows the vehicles to exceed their tire speed rating.

The defect stems from an error in the powertrain control module, which enables the trucks to travel faster than the maximum speed their tires are rated to handle. This can compromise tire integrity, leading to a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, stated that it is not aware of any incidents or owner reports related to this issue. The recall is believed to affect only models equipped with specific tires.

Ram 2500 Recall Details

  • Models affected: Ram 2500 pickups from 2023 to 2026
  • Number of vehicles: 12,736
  • Issue: Software error in powertrain control module allows speeds exceeding tire speed rating
  • Risk: Compromised tire integrity, loss of vehicle control, increased crash risk
  • Solution: Software update to be installed at dealerships

Owners will need to bring their trucks to an authorized Ram dealership, where technicians will install updated software for the powertrain control module. The fix is expected to be straightforward and should prevent the trucks from exceeding their tire speed limits.

Ram and Stellantis have not released additional details about the recall, but owner notifications are scheduled to be mailed out in early next month.

Ram’s High-Speed Legacy

While this recall addresses an unintended performance issue, Ram is no stranger to trucks engineered for high speeds. The upcoming Ram 1500 TRX will return with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine, generating 777 horsepower (579 kW / 788 PS) and 680 lb-ft (921 Nm) of torque. This powertrain enables the TRX to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 118 mph (190 km/h).
