The Los Angeles Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Initially, Simpson stated he had never met with Rams head coach Sean McVay or general manager Les Snead during the pre-draft process. However, he later corrected his remarks, prompting Snead to share further details about their private meetings.
During a Tuesday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Snead explained the Rams’ strategy of avoiding publicized team visits. He noted that the NFL allows each team 30 official visits, and these are publicly tracked across the league. Snead warned that disclosing interest could lead to competitors trading up to select a prospect before the Rams have the chance.
Instead, the Rams prioritize unreported private meetings, which they conducted 66 times during this year’s draft process. Snead emphasized the importance of discretion to players:
"We do like to emphasize ‘Hey, look, try to keep these private meetings between us.’ For that gamesmanship. We like for other teams not to know that we're interested. We do emphasize that a little stronger."
Snead revealed that Simpson adhered to this guidance after meeting with both McVay and Snead. His initial post-draft comments stayed "on script" longer than necessary, reflecting the team’s emphasis on confidentiality. Snead also confirmed that McVay would never support drafting a quarterback without first meeting them in person, validating the legitimacy of Simpson’s path to the Rams.
