Actress Reese Witherspoon has responded to backlash over her public support for artificial intelligence (AI), clarifying that she has not received any compensation for her advocacy.

“Well, I guess my AI post got people talking,” Witherspoon wrote in her Instagram Stories on Monday. “To be clear, no one is paying me to talk about this. I’m just a curious human. My kids are learning about AI tools, I know a lot of founders who are vibe coding, and I hear about people using AI in every sector of business.”

“I want to acknowledge people’s concerns; they are valid. I’m aware of the impact this could have on jobs across so many industries. I understand environmental concerns. I care deeply about local communities. And I have concerns about impeding AGI.”

Witherspoon emphasized her commitment to understanding AI’s implications, stating:

“I don’t believe computers should replace humanity. I’m planning on learning as much as possible so that I’m educated about this technological revolution. If you want to learn with me, great, let’s do this! If you don’t, that’s okay too.”

In subsequent Instagram Stories, Witherspoon shared the AI voices she follows for insights and asked her 30.5 million followers whether they were aware that Instagram itself uses AI in its functions.

Over the past several months, Witherspoon has been vocal about AI’s expansion into Hollywood, particularly urging women to familiarize themselves with AI tools to remain competitive in the evolving job market.

On April 16, she posted a warning to her followers, stating that women “are not keeping up” with men in the AI race and that the technology could disproportionately displace female workers. Her comments came amid ongoing debates about AI’s role in the entertainment industry.

The backlash against Witherspoon’s AI advocacy has been significant, partly due to her financial ties to Blackstone Inc., an alternative asset management firm that backed Candle Media—the company that acquired her media company, Hello Sunshine, in 2021. Blackstone has made substantial investments in AI, leading to speculation that Witherspoon’s support for the technology may be financially motivated.
