Sara Blakely, the billionaire founder of Spanx, built her $1.2 billion shapewear and apparel empire with just $5,000 in savings, unconventional marketing tactics, and relentless determination. But the entrepreneur revealed a surprising source of inspiration that fueled her journey: a motivational cassette tape.
Blakely shared this story during her commencement address at Florida State University’s spring 2026 graduation ceremony, explaining how a gift from her father at age 16 shaped her mindset for success.
How a Teenage Habit Shaped a Billion-Dollar Vision
At 16, Blakely’s father gave her a cassette tape titled How to Be a No-Limit Person, written and narrated by Dr. Wayne Dyer, a renowned self-help author, motivational speaker, and licensed therapist with an EdD in counseling. Dyer authored over 40 books, most centered on the power of intention and self-belief.
“I heard a man’s voice talking about the power of your own thoughts and visualizing the future you want—manifesting, not fearing failure, and not caring what other people think about you,” Blakely told the graduates.
While her peers were listening to Bon Jovi and Madonna in the car, Blakely replayed Dyer’s tape on repeat. His teachings became the foundation of her mindset, teaching her to reject self-imposed limits and embrace a purpose-driven life.
From Tape to Triumph: The ‘No-Limit’ Mentality in Action
Dyer’s philosophy—shifting focus to internal guidance, abandoning perceived limitations, and living with conviction—became a guiding force for Blakely. On Instagram, she has publicly thanked Dyer (who passed away in 2015) for instilling in her the ability to become a “no limit” person, a principle she credits for her success.
This mindset wasn’t just theoretical; it shaped Blakely’s actions as she launched Spanx. One standout example came when she pursued a meeting with a Neiman Marcus executive. When the conversation stalled, Blakely pivoted with a bold request: she asked the executive to join her in the bathroom to demonstrate Spanx’s transformative power. The executive agreed—and after seeing the difference Spanx made in Blakely’s white pants, the deal was sealed.
The One Investment That Changed Everything
Addressing the FSU graduates, Blakely emphasized the importance of self-belief from the start of her entrepreneurial journey. “The most critical thing that I did—the thing that everyone here can do—is I made one big investment early on. I invested in me.”
She went on to call a positive mindset “the single greatest asset any entrepreneur has.”
“Because at the end of the day, if you don’t believe deeply in your own work, why should anyone else?” she concluded.
