Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay praised quarterback Matthew Stafford for his professional response to the team’s decision to draft his heir apparent, Ty Simpson, with a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Speaking on ESPN, McVay highlighted Stafford’s unwavering professionalism and his supportive stance toward Simpson’s arrival.
"He couldn't be more of a stud," McVay said. "When you're an elite competitor the way he is, he responded exactly the way I would want to. He's going to put his arm around this guy. . . . He's like, 'I understand it.' He's earned the right to be year to year, and if he tells me he wants to play three more years, no one would be more excited about that than me."
McVay also noted that adding Simpson to the roster will allow the Rams to manage Stafford’s workload more effectively, particularly as he enters his 18th NFL season.
"Going into Year 18, you manage his workload," McVay explained.
Stafford is currently in the final year of his contract and has previously indicated consideration of retirement. However, McVay emphasized that the selection of Simpson was not intended to pressure Stafford into leaving but rather to ensure a smooth transition when he ultimately decides to step away.
"He's earned the right to be year to year," McVay reiterated, underscoring the Rams’ commitment to Stafford’s future with the team.
