Corpus Christi, Texas, a city of over 500,000 people and a key industrial center along the Gulf Coast, is poised to become the first major U.S. city to run completely out of water. The crisis stems from a prolonged five-year drought and decades of insufficient water management, according to Inside Climate News.

The city, which serves as a critical water source for chemical plants, oil facilities, and plastics factories in the Gulf region, is now facing an unprecedented water shortage. City Manager Peter Zanoni announced this week that Corpus Christi will be forced to reduce overall water consumption by 25%—nearly 16 million gallons per day—beginning in September.

“We have no precedent to follow. There’s no manual, there’s no video,” Zanoni told the city council, highlighting the lack of guidance for such an extreme scenario.

While details on how the cuts will be implemented remain unclear, the impacts are expected to be severe. Schools, hospitals, and residents may face water restrictions, while commercial and industrial operations—including the largest bakery in Corpus Christi, operated by H-E-B—could face significant disruptions.

“We don’t have enough information from the city to make a statement on how we would proceed or how this would affect our business,” a spokesperson for H-E-B told Climate News.

Climate Scientists Warn of Broader Water Crisis

Experts warn that Corpus Christi’s water crisis is not an isolated incident but a sign of worsening water shortages across the U.S. due to corporate water use and climate change. Shannon Marquez, a professor at the Columbia Water Center, told Grist that the situation in Corpus Christi reflects a broader trend if proactive measures are not taken.

“What we’re seeing in Corpus Christi is really not an isolated crisis. It’s very consistent with how things are going to unfold if we don’t start to plan.” — Shannon Marquez, Columbia Water Center

Marquez emphasized that without significant changes in water stewardship, more cities could face similar shortages as climate change exacerbates drought conditions.

Texas’ Water Crisis: A Growing Concern

Corpus Christi’s predicament underscores the urgent need for sustainable water management in Texas and beyond. The state’s reliance on dwindling water supplies, combined with industrial demand and climate-driven droughts, has created a tinderbox scenario for future water shortages.

As the first major U.S. city on the brink of total water depletion, Corpus Christi serves as a cautionary tale for other municipalities grappling with the dual challenges of climate change and resource mismanagement.
