President Donald Trump is facing widespread online ridicule during his visit to China this week, and late-night host Seth Meyers took notice of the public mockery.

Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as part of his trip, where he pledged to address key issues such as trade, artificial intelligence, and military conflicts. However, ahead of the meeting, Chinese internet users—despite Beijing’s strict censorship—circulated viral posts and memes openly mocking Trump.

Among the most popular were phrases like “Trump came to China. We won the tariff war” and “Trump, you’re welcome to visit China and learn from us.”

Meyers, host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, highlighted the irony in his segment A Closer Look.

“What happened to the fantastic relationship?”

He continued,

“I mean, China gave Trump a lavish greeting while quietly mocking him behind his back. Although, internet memes and posts are hardly behind Trump’s back. They’re mocking him where he’s most likely to see it. This is like Tigger writing ‘Pooh is dumber than a rock’ and putting it in a jar of honey.”

Trump had previously boasted about his “fantastic” relationship with China during the trip, praising Xi as a “great leader” and calling their bond an “honor.” Meyers questioned the sincerity of Trump’s tough stance on China.

“Dude, what happened to standing up to China?”
“He’s like your buddy who finally works up the courage to dump his girlfriend, and you see him the next day, and he’s like, ‘Guess who’s engaged?!’”
