Adam McKay, the acclaimed director behind films like Don’t Look Up and The Big Short, has launched a scathing critique of the Democratic Party and white liberal voters, labeling them as "the worst" in a recent podcast interview.
In a Wednesday episode of the "Urgent Futures" podcast, hosted by Forbes contributor Jesse Damiani, McKay voiced his ongoing frustration with the Democratic Party and its white liberal supporters. He argued that this demographic benefits from a "broken system" and exhibits smug, privileged attitudes, particularly on climate issues.
McKay’s Criticism of White Moneyed Liberals
"We are being hit with the high-grade marketing and no group is worse than white liberals. I mean, they are the worst," McKay stated. "I’ve tried to talk to them about climate; they are so smug and captured. And it boils down to privilege. I mean, when you talk to white moneyed liberals, they’re getting a lot from this broken system."
He further accused Democratic Party leaders of mastering "manipulative marketing" and highlighted their role in keeping healthcare privatized, among other policy failures.
McKay’s Departure from the Democratic Party
After President Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election in November, McKay announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he was officially leaving the Democratic Party. He expressed his readiness to "abandon" the Democrats and considered joining the Green Party or Working Families Party, while remaining "open to ideas."
During the podcast, McKay expanded on his disillusionment with progressive and liberal voters who continue to support the Democratic Party despite its shortcomings.
"It is incredible to watch people this far down the road still say, ‘You gotta stand behind the Democrat Party.’ The same party that wouldn’t convict Trump of a crime after he told a crowd, ‘Go to the Capitol,’" the Oscar winner noted. "The same party where the previous presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, literally funded Trump’s campaign."
Blame for Trump’s Reelection on Democratic Leaders
On the same night he announced his departure from the Democratic Party, McKay directly blamed the party’s leadership for Trump’s reelection. In a post on X, he listed several reasons, including:
- Spreading misinformation about President Joe Biden’s cognitive health for two years;
- Refusing to hold an open convention for a new nominee;
- Failing to advocate for public healthcare;
- Supporting fracking;
- The Cheney family’s role in the "year-long slaughter of children in Gaza."
He questioned whether such a strategy could ever be successful.
Advocacy Against Trump Administration’s Policies
In August 2025, McKay joined over 2,300 Writers Guild of America members in signing an open letter condemning the Trump administration for its "unprecedented, authoritarian" attacks on free speech.
