Ikea’s Only Hotel: A 360-Degree Brand Experience

Upon entering a room at the Ikea Hotell in Älmhult, Sweden, guests are greeted by a familiar sight: an inventory of Ikea products. The room includes an Ikea bed, Ikea sheets, Ikea towels, Ikea desk, Ikea chairs, Ikea curtains, Ikea light fixtures, Ikea trashcans, Ikea clothes hangers, Ikea side tables, Ikea throw pillow, and an Ikea clock. This is no coincidence—the hotel is the world’s only Ikea-branded accommodation.

Location and History

The Ikea Hotell is situated in Älmhult, the small Swedish town where Ikea was founded in the 1940s and where its headquarters remains today. The hotel offers a full immersion into the brand, with every space—from the lobby to the amenity areas—furnished exclusively with Ikea products. Rooms feature items like the Fröset chairs in the lobby and the Alex desk in guest rooms, reflecting the company’s signature aesthetic of affordability and spatial efficiency.

A Try-Before-You-Buy Experience

Stepping into a guest room at the Ikea Hotell feels like entering one of the meticulously styled showrooms found in Ikea stores. However, the space is designed with practicality in mind, offering a more compact and functional layout. While guests do not need to assemble the furniture, they experience firsthand how Ikea’s products integrate into everyday living.

Exclusive Access to Ikea’s Prototype Lab

In early April, I stayed overnight at the Ikea Hotell during an exclusive visit to Ikea’s headquarters in Älmhult. The company invited me as the first journalist to tour its secretive prototype lab, where conceptual designs are refined into the roughly 2,000 new products introduced to Ikea stores annually. The hotel stay served as an introduction to the brand before the tour, with Ikea’s branding and products prominently featured throughout the property.

Älmhult: The Heart of the Ikea Universe

Älmhult, a provincial Swedish town of about 17,000 residents, is deeply connected to Ikea. Many locals are employed by the global home furnishings company, which dominates the town’s economy. An 80-minute train ride from Malmö, Älmhult is a hub for Ikea’s workforce, with direct trains from the town’s station often packed with standing-room-only passengers in the afternoons.

The town is a microcosm of the Ikea brand. Venture beyond its center, and you’ll find yourself in the Swedish countryside, but within Älmhult itself, the influence of Ikea is everywhere.

The Hotel’s Deep Connection to Ikea’s Past

The Ikea Hotell’s location is tied to the company’s history. It sits across a large parking lot from a warehouse-sized building that was Ikea’s first purpose-built furniture showroom. Opened in 1958 with a modernist concrete design, the building became a national attraction and a magnet for customers. Initially intended as a display space for Ikea’s furniture, it soon evolved into the company’s first store, drawing budget-conscious shoppers from across Sweden. The store operated for over 50 years before reopening in 2015 as the Ikea Museum.

The museum spans three floors and features exhibition spaces filled with historic furnishings and memorabilia, a cafeteria, and a gift shop. Guests at the Ikea Hotell have easy access to this cultural landmark, further immersing them in the brand’s heritage.
