A 40-year-old man has been arrested in South Korea for using artificial intelligence to generate a fake image of a runaway wolf, which authorities say obstructed an urgent investigation into the animal’s escape, BBC reported.
The AI-generated image depicted Neukgu, a two-year-old wolf that had escaped from a zoo in Daejeon.
Following Neukgu’s escape, authorities launched an extensive search operation to locate and safely return the animal. Neukgu, a third-generation descendant of wolves, was considered vital to ongoing conservation efforts aimed at reintroducing wolf populations in South Korea. Native South Korean wolves had been declared extinct in the wild in the 1960s.
Public concern grew nationwide as animal rights activists feared Neukgu could be injured or killed during the rescue. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung reassured the public that rescue teams would prioritize the wolf’s safety, according to The Guardian.
