What’s New in Subnautica 2

The cinematic trailer, while not showcasing gameplay, teased several new features:

  • Full Co-Op Mode: Players can now experience the entire game with friends, a feature previously only available through mods.
  • New Underwater Creatures: A sleek, agile fish capable of shooting spear-like projectiles was highlighted.
  • Above-Water Exploration: The trailer featured a mysterious structure emerging from the ocean, suggesting more time will be spent exploring above the water.

Development Challenges and Legal Battles

Subnautica 2 has faced significant hurdles during development. In 2025, publisher Krafton fired the CEO of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Ted Gill, and other executives to avoid paying a bonus. However, a judge recently ruled that Krafton had breached its agreement, forcing the publisher to reinstate Gill and the fired executives.

Despite these challenges, development has continued, and Unknown Worlds Entertainment has confirmed that Krafton is “not the publisher anymore”, according to a report by Eurogamer. The extent of Krafton’s future involvement remains unclear as the game approaches early access.

What’s Next for Subnautica 2

As the game enters early access, players can expect ongoing updates and additional content to be added over time. The reveal of the early access date marks a major milestone for fans eagerly awaiting the sequel to one of the most beloved underwater survival games.
