Tether shareholder and billionaire tycoon Christopher Harborne provided Nigel Farage with a £5 million ($6.7 million) donation shortly before the Reform UK leader reversed his earlier decision not to contest the UK’s 2024 general election.

In May 2024, Farage publicly stated he would not stand as a Member of Parliament. However, by July 2024, he announced his candidacy for the Clacton constituency.

The Guardian revealed that Harborne’s donation was made before Farage’s abrupt U-turn on his election plans. The gift remained undisclosed until now, as it was technically provided before Farage’s parliamentary bid was announced.

Farage preemptively responded to the report in an article published in The Telegraph hours before the Guardian’s piece, titled “Farage: My home was firebombed.”

Harborne’s £5M Gift: Farage Claims It Ensures ‘Safety and Security’

In a subsequent interview with The Telegraph, Farage disclosed that Harborne’s donation was intended to ensure his “safety and security for the rest of my life.” He described Harborne as “an ardent supporter who is deeply concerned for my safety” and criticized the UK government’s lack of financial support for his security.

Farage also referenced a firebombing attack on his home in 2023, stating:

“I would rather not be discussing any of this, but I am having to because someone has got hold of material about my private finances, which is outrageous, and which I believe was illegally obtained.”

Reform UK’s Legal Intervention Delayed Guardian’s Report

When The Guardian approached Farage and Harborne for comment, neither responded. Instead, Reform UK’s legal team requested a delay in the publication of the article. The Guardian agreed, setting a new publication deadline. However, The Telegraph published Farage’s interview before this deadline.

Harborne’s Financial Ties to Farage and Reform UK

Christopher Harborne, a wealthy cryptocurrency and aviation tycoon, has donated over £22 million ($29 million) to Reform UK over the past seven years. His investments include significant holdings in Ethereum and Tether, as well as stakes in aviation and defense firms.

The Guardian has previously scrutinized Farage’s public advocacy of cryptocurrency, particularly in relation to Harborne’s donations to the UK’s Conservative and Brexit parties in 2019. In 2025, Farage promoted Tether on a UK talk show just one month after Harborne donated £9 million to Reform UK.
