President Donald Trump suggested he took a break during the ongoing conflict with Iran, telling reporters on Thursday that he had given the situation a "little break" despite the prolonged military engagement.
During a press briefing, a reporter challenged Trump’s claim that the United States had been involved in the conflict for only "five and a half weeks." The reporter corrected the president, stating that the U.S. and Israel had launched military strikes on Iran on February 28, marking 55 days—or nearly eight weeks—of involvement.
Trump responded,
"Well, I hoped that, but I took a little break. I gave them a break."
The president’s remarks come amid ongoing military and diplomatic tensions, including a ceasefire announced on April 7 after threats of escalation. While Trump indefinitely extended the ceasefire on Tuesday, the conflict remains unresolved. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and U.S. Marines recently fired upon and seized an Iranian cargo ship on Sunday.
A reporter later asked Trump how long he was willing to wait for Iran’s response during peace negotiations. Trump replied,
"Don’t rush me. We were in Vietnam for 18 years. We were in Iraq for many, many years."He added that, for the first time, he was referring to the situation as a "war."
Trump’s comments follow his earlier false claim about the duration of U.S. involvement in the conflict, raising questions about the accuracy of his statements.
