President Donald Trump addressed his actions during the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) shooting incident, insisting he was following Secret Service instructions when he dropped to the ground. His remarks came during an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes, aired on April 26, 2026.
Videos of the incident show Trump appearing to fall accidentally while being escorted offstage by law enforcement agents. At least three agents appeared to reach down to lift him back up before ushering him away.
Trump’s Account of the Incident
During the interview, host Norah O’Donnell questioned Trump about his movements, referencing the videos. “It looked chaotic. At one point, you were down. What was happening?” she asked.
“I turned, I started walking. They said, ‘Please go down, please go down, on the floor.’ So, I went down. And the first lady went down also. We were asked to go down by agents as I was walking,” Trump replied.
“They wanted you almost to crawl out?” O’Donnell pressed.
“I was standing up—pretty much—I was standing up, and turned around the opposite direction, and started pretty much walking out. Pretty tall, a little bent over, because you know, I’m not looking to be standing too tall. And uh, but I was walking out. Pretty—I’m about half way there and they said, ‘Please go down to the floor, please go down to the floor.’ So, I dropped to the floor, and so did the first lady,” Trump explained.
Trump added that he “wasn’t making it that easy” for the Secret Service, stating he wanted to observe the situation as shots rang out.
Contradictory Evidence
Videos of the event tell a different story. As Trump exited the stage surrounded by agents, he appeared to drop to the ground by accident. Security footage shows agents reaching down to assist him before escorting him offstage.
In another video, agents can be heard announcing the room was “clear” as Trump moved off the stage, suggesting there was no imminent threat requiring him to crawl to safety.
Public and Media Reactions
Social media users and political commentators highlighted the discrepancy between Trump’s account and the videos. Some questioned why agents would pull someone back up immediately after instructing them to stay down.
- MeidasTouch tweeted: “Hmm. Do the agents typically reach for a person and pull him back up right away immediately after asking him to get closer to the ground?”
- User @beyoncegarden shared a video clip with the caption: “THE WAY HE FELL LMFAOOO😭😭😭”
It remains unclear why Trump would dispute a minor detail backed by multiple video sources. While tripping during an emergency is not shameful, his insistence on rewriting the event may reflect concerns about public perception.
