Trump Ally Turned Critic Named in Counterterrorism Strategy

Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes, two prominent figures who have publicly criticized Donald Trump, have been identified by a senior White House official as potential targets under the Trump administration’s counterterrorism strategy. The remarks were made by Sebastian Gorka during an interview with Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow.

Gorka’s Controversial Remarks on Right-Wing Extremism

Gorka, a far-right influencer vying for the role of National Counterterrorism Center director, was asked whether right-wing extremism posed a significant threat. While he argued that right-wing violence did not show “comparable trendlines” to left-wing extremism—a common talking point among conservatives—he then singled out Carlson and Fuentes as figures outside the conservative movement.

“We have to have an effective, accurate snapshot on who are part of the conservative movement today, because I would say to you I’m not sure that Nick Fuentes or Tucker Carlson are conservatives,” Gorka stated. “If you are lauding Sharia law, if you are saying that there are Muslim states that seem to be better qualitatively than America in terms of freedom and prosperity, I’m not sure that means you’re part of the conservative movement. So if you remove those individuals and you understand that they’re not conservatives, what’s left?”

Clarifying Gorka’s Claims

Gorka’s assertion that Carlson “lauded Sharia law” is inaccurate. Carlson’s actual argument was that Western cities were suffering from “self-hatred,” while Eastern cities demonstrated “stability,” “hospitality,” and “tolerance of diversity.”

Why Carlson and Fuentes Are in the Crosshairs

Independent journalist Ken Klippenstein highlighted that the administration’s focus on Carlson and Fuentes stems not from extremism but from their criticism of Trump’s Iran military strategy. Carlson has been a vocal opponent of Trump’s Iran policy, calling the strikes “the single most foolish thing any American president has ever done.” Fuentes, similarly, condemned the strikes and declared the U.S. had “lost decisively,” failing to achieve any objectives.

Additionally, both figures have diverged from MAGA-aligned policies by criticizing Israel. Fuentes, known for his neo-Nazi sympathies, and Carlson, who has promoted racist conspiracy theories, have also condemned the U.S.-Israel relationship and the ongoing violence in Gaza. Despite their influence within conservative circles, their opposition to Trump’s policies has placed them in the administration’s crosshairs.

Contrast with Other Domestic Terrorism Labels

The administration has previously described other domestic terrorists as “anti-American, radically pro-transgender, and anarchist,” a stark contrast to the characterization of Carlson and Fuentes.

  • Tucker Carlson: Criticized Trump’s Iran strikes and U.S.-Israel policies; known for promoting racist conspiracy theories.
  • Nick Fuentes: Neo-Nazi sympathizer who has urged against military intervention in Iran and criticized U.S. foreign policy.
