The Trump administration’s decision to halt all U.S. troop deployments to Poland has sparked outrage among Republicans, who argue the move undermines longstanding alliances in Europe. The announcement follows a recent Pentagon decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, a move criticized by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over U.S. actions in the Iran war.

Poland is the only European country that has consistently requested a U.S. military presence, making the abrupt withdrawal particularly contentious.

Republican Lawmakers Decry Lack of Transparency

Representative Don Bacon, a member of the Armed Services Committee, condemned the decision, stating,

“I just want to say this is a slap in the face to Poland; it’s a slap in the face to our Baltic friends. It’s a slap to the face of this committee … I may not represent 100 percent of people on this committee, but I think I represent the views of the vast majority … We disagree.”

Armed Services Chair Representative Mike Rogers echoed concerns over the lack of congressional oversight, saying,

“We don’t know what’s going on here, but I can just tell you we’re not happy with what’s being talked about, particularly since there’s been no statutory consultation with us.”

The Pentagon, however, insisted the move was not an “unexpected, last-minute decision.”

Democrats Join Criticism Over Unclear Strategy

Top Armed Services Democrat Adam Smith also expressed frustration, stating,

“The only answer I’ve got is, ‘Well, that’s what they told us to do.’ Okay, why? If there’s some strategy behind it, then you guys ought to know and you ought to be able to communicate it to us.”

The bipartisan backlash highlights growing Republican dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s approach to European defense policy.
