President Donald Trump has expressed a combative stance ahead of planned peace talks with Iran, suggesting the U.S. is ready to resume military strikes if negotiations do not succeed.
In a Tuesday morning phone call with CNBC’s Squawk Box, Trump stated his expectation of renewed bombing campaigns. “Well, I expect to be bombing, because I think that’s a better attitude to go in with, but we’re ready to go. I mean the military is raring to go,” he said.
When asked whether he would extend a ceasefire if talks collapsed, Trump responded, “I don’t want to do that. We don’t have that much time.” His remarks indicate a lack of confidence in diplomatic progress.
Trump’s aggressive rhetoric follows reports that his previous statements have already strained negotiations. The situation escalated further on Monday when the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Iran to demand its immediate release and threaten retaliation.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned on Monday night that the country remains prepared for renewed conflict. “We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield,” he wrote on X.
While Iran has told regional mediators it plans to send a negotiating team to Islamabad on Tuesday, Tehran has yet to publicly confirm its participation in the talks.
