There is a striking disconnect between the visible deterioration of Donald Trump’s mental state and the escalating cult-like adoration from his aides. As his decline becomes more apparent, their praise for him grows proportionately more extreme.

Consider the recent actions of his top spokesperson, who offered a bizarre justification for Trump’s deranged “proposal” to turn Venezuela into the 51st U.S. state. The spokesperson also attempted to portray Trump as having absolute control over Iran, but inadvertently revealed his indifference to rising gas prices.

Meanwhile, his propagandists launched an aggressive attack on a reporter for sharing an image of Trump sleeping through a public event. The contrast is stark: Trump’s decline is accelerating, yet the cult-like worship surrounding him has reached unprecedented levels.

Beneath this unsettling dynamic lies a darker truth: His loyalists are aware that his influence is fading, and none dare acknowledge it openly.

To discuss these developments, we spoke with Virginia Heffernan, a writer for The New Republic and author of a recent piece examining MAGA psychology. Our conversation covers fresh signs of Trump’s deteriorating condition, the significant void his eventual departure will create within the right-wing movement, and why his supporters increasingly resemble an “end-stage cult.”
