After a string of underwhelming game releases and a poorly received film adaptation, Ubisoft is reimagining its Assassin's Creed franchise in a bold new format: live theater.

The upcoming stage production, Heredis: Echoes of the Past, will blend acrobatics, urban parkour, choreographed combat, and large-scale immersive visual environments, according to Rock Paper Shotgun. While not a direct adaptation of any single game, the show will draw inspiration from the franchise’s signature approach—exploring diverse historical periods through a modern lens.

Plot and Inspiration

The story centers on Naël, a man whose father has vanished. His search leads him to the HEREDIS program, a mysterious initiative that thrusts him into a series of trials spanning multiple historical eras. Along the way, he encounters figures tied to the Templars, though the play avoids direct references to the Animus or Abstergo.

The HEREDIS program appears to be a thematic successor to the Animus, expanding the Assassin's Creed universe without strict canon adherence. This flexibility allows the narrative to explore the franchise’s core themes—powerful elites manipulating history from the shadows—across millennia.

Notably, promotional materials suggest the production will also incorporate modern-day elements of the Assassin's Creed saga. Since the departure of Desmond Miles in Assassin's Creed III, contemporary settings have been largely absent from the games. While some fans welcomed this shift, others, including this writer, have longed for the return of sequences that juxtapose historical and modern perspectives.

Production Details and Schedule

Heredis: Echoes of the Past will debut in two cities:

  • Montréal: December 3, 2024
  • Paris: Final performance on February 7, 2025

The production marks Ubisoft’s latest attempt to revitalize the franchise after the commercial and critical missteps of its 2016 film adaptation, which failed to resonate with audiences or critics.
